You have accidentally stumbled upon the portfolio site of Dan Atherton- published children's book illustrator and theme park artist extraordinaire.
Currently based in Anaheim, CA, I work at theme parks in the state as an artist and Assistant Park Manager doing Name Paintings with the Korean leather brush.

This site will enable you to get intimate with my artistic side, where you will find a wide variety of samples ranging from comic art to fine art, digital to analogue, and believe it or not, from drawing with my hands to drawing with my feet. You will explore my love of animation (especially storyboarding), and get an exclusive* look at my sketchbook. (*Not that exclusive) And of course, there is a resume that boasts all the cool stuff I've done for dough, from painting murals to appearing on TV. So enter the site now and have a look around.

Update- 2/22/2007

Sketchblog

Back in the day, when I was young, I'm not a kid anymore... but I used to have a guestbook to sign for feedback. Since guestbook depot had serious spam and virus problems, I have now opened a sketch blog thanks to Anne Bush, which can be viewed at: http://danatherton.blogspot.com/. This will be a really nice way for people to learn a little about what's behind some of my sketches, plus it will bring back the ability to cut me down to size and motiviate me to actually get really freakin good.

Update- 12/12/2006

Updates are pointless

...so I'll keep it brief. New sketchbook and photo entries, plus the photo section has been reformatted. Also a brand new THEME PARKS section to more easily showcase how I actually spend my time. Semi-frequent updates can be expected there.

Update- Independence Day plus one, 2006

Still voting.

On Flag Day I discussed voting stuff off the site via my guestbook. Well it has come to my attention that guestbook depot is down while they try to solve their crazy spam problem. In the meantime, we'll do this thing email style. So drop me an email and tell me what sucks on here so it can be gone. Also, check out a few new sketchbook entries, and for the first time ever, look for an EASTER EGG on the letter brush page.

Update- Flag Day, 2006
(You don't even know what that is, do you? I sure don't.)

VOTE IT OFF!!

Now is your big chance! If you visit this site before it's updated in a few more months, (maybe the month where Heidi Klum is the featured SI* babe) then this is your shot-of-a-lifetime to help vote some of the crap off of this overstocked web site. Pick a photo or a sketch you hate, or hell, pick a whole category, and go to the guestbook to bitch about it. You'll see entries dorpping like flies without even so much as an update to bid them a proper farewell with.

*For all you straight women out there, SI means Sports Illustrated.

Update 02/27/06

Thanks for visiting, stop by any time!!

Somehow it has happened, people have been showing up at my site for no apparent reason. First off, I'd like to sincerely thank all those who signed my guestbook. SegroMom, Kate Williams, Island Shop, and more awesomer than superman batman and the incredible hulk put together. It is your life insurance, your http://pd4.funnyhost, your little bird, and your star hole that have shown how truly important this site is for our species as a whole. And while no one realizes more than I do how lame this site is, I have actually had a few visitors who have found themselves here on purpose. That's right, people have actually come to my site, stayed for a visit, and emailed me based on inquiries of my talents, and even job offers- and as far as I can tell, they weren't paid to do it. And so I have been inspired, and will continue to update this site every 3-4 months, because I am truly touched, and mildly tickled. Now GO TO DISNEYLAND AND GET YOUR NAME PAINTED!!!!!!

Update 11/26/05

Now a Disney Artist!!

As a kid, it was always my dream to become a Disney artist, and while I may not be animating their next motion picture, I am helping kick off America's newest Leather Brush Art booth, as well as training the new artists and helping to get the whole thing up and running. So for the next 3 months I'll be staying up in Anaheim, soaking up sun by the Matterhorn and rolling in Disney's holiday dollars. Now I know why it's the happiest homecoming on Earth. Hope to see you there!

Update 11/02/05

Boo!

Happy Halloween and stuff. Got plenty of new sketchbook entries, including new Halloween-themed Leather Brush Art. What's even cooler is that the booth at Disney Land is opening up by the end of the month, and so I have included one dragon letter just as a preview.

And in other big news, the photo section has more than doubled in size, mainly thanks to my trip home a few weeks ago. So go peek at shots from New Hampshire, New York, and Fenway Park, plus LA and the San Diego Zoo. The real challenge was at Fenway, getting action shots of the Red Sox game with a camera that has about a full-second delay on the shutter. What have I learned from this? A lot of good photography is just luck. (For proof, see the shot of Manny Ramirez getting hit by a pitch.)

Update 9/02/05

Gandalf the White

Gandalf actually has nothing to do with this site, except that it used to be grey but now it's white and is therefore powerful enough to kick the crap out of Sauruman. Anyway, lame Tolkien references aside, I was given a day off today and decided that the best website an artist can have is one that actually looks like it was made by an artist. So I'm chewing up all the graphic design skills I don't have and am spitting out a much more elegant and attractive aesthetic appeal up in this bitch. Holy freakin babbling. So far the opening page and the photo pages have been tweaked, and are looking pretty freakin sweet. Keep a watch out for more improvements- like the possibility of tv networks saying NO to every celebrity sluthead who thinks she deserves her own reality show. (Why do reality shows always go to the fake people?) More babbling. Anyway, Christmas is not too far off, so look forward to having a funny new greeting card illustration or two on here. We'll see.

And I really don't find it necessary to keep pointing out that I have new Leather Brush Art on here, since that's about the only thing I do with my time.

Update 8/28/05

Murphy's Law

After over a month off from caricatures, I was back in action on Thursday, and my sketches were at their best yet. I even drew a car salesman who said he was going to use it as his postcard that he sends out to customers. And of course, I forgot to bring a camera.

Plenty of new brush art though, check it out.

Update 7/24/05

Caricatures

Yup, two more, and two more photos. Now excuse me whilst I go read Harry Potter.

Update 7/06/05

Caricatures

That's right, brand spankin new ones in the sketchbook section. There's also a lot of Leather Brush work going on that I can't currently show. We just got a contract passed to start a new booth up at Disney Land, and so I have been working on designing new fantasy-themed letters for up there. There is also an outside chance that I will be moving up there and helping to run the new operation.

Aside from that, Comic Con is coming up, which means Max and Lana will be in town. I'll also enjoy the fact that I'm not going for business' sake for the first time in years. Maybe now I'll actually buy something... other than an indie comic from some guy I pity.

Comic Strips
Yup, two new ones. Enjoy!
